About Pain Medicine Unit

Department of Anaesthesiology, Critical care and Pain medicine

In the year 1961, the first separate Department of Anaesthesiology was established in the state of Uttar Pradesh in KGMU under the headship of Prof. RP Badola. Under the leadership of Prof. G.P. Singh, at present the department of Anaesthesiology has a 29 member strong Faculty and provides routine and emergency anaesthesia services to the entire Hospital (GM & Associated Hospitals) including super specialities Cardiovascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Gastro-surgery, Orthopedics, Radiotherapy, Psychiatry, Plastic Surgery, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Urology and Oncology. The department has a dedicated Pain Medicine Unit with a fully functional well equipped OT, completely operational 10 bedded pain ward and successfully running Pain Clinic OPD four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday).

In 2019, Unit has started PDCC course in Pain management currently having 2 candidates. It is a recognized centre for the Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care (CCEPC) by Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC).

It has been organising regular workshops and teaching courses for the training of nursing and paramedical students at skill training center.

The Unit has sent a proposal for executing DM (Pain Medicine) under them. Pain Unit has been working ceaselessly in the field of cancer pain, chronic pain and post operative acute pain services.

The Unit started free Morphine distribution in Pain Clinic OPD since June 2021 with the motto of keeping the patients pain free. The pain OT is well resourced for all the basic and advanced interventions including fluoroscopic, USG guided, conventional and cooled radio frequency ablation, ozone therapy, endoscopic procedures, platelet rich plasma injections etc.

The unit has been hosting and organising many workshops and CME on cancer and chronic pain. With the golden opportunity to host the ISPCCON 2023 the unit and the department will set the flag high to make this event a huge success.
